The soft tug of longing,
a thread loose.
The pull of it, unwinding
the cuff: come undone.

A strand of wind strung tight
between branch
and pane, a low keening:
a wild moan, a song.

The parents, grandparents,
greats, great-greats.
Stacked then, tidy as cordwood…
